2:02AM - A-Z Favorite Song Survey (also Aleph-Tav)

After the Top Ten with a letter, I decided to do a <lj-cut="Favorite Song Starting with A-Z.">Favorite Song Starting with A-Z.

A - Ahalel, sung on Sar Shalom by Karen Davis
B - Blessed is the Man, sung on Introducing Israel's Hope
C - Call to Ephraim, sung on Restoration of All Things by Lenny & Varda Harris
D - Dracheichah, sung on The Lamb Trilogy
E - Enter His Gates, sung on Sim Shalom by Steve McConnell
F - Fall On Me, sung on Come Dance With Me by Joel Chernoff
G - Go Through the Gates, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
H - Hashkifa, sung on Voices For Israel by Kol Achai
I - Israel, My Beloved, sung on Israel My Beloved by Karen Davis
J - Jesus Christ Is Lord, sung on Holy Fire by Paul Wilbur
K - Ki Malachav, sung on Voices For Israel by The Chevra
L - Lo b'Chail, sung on All Israel Shall Be Saved by Tents of Mercy
M - Mimizrach, sung on Hallelu Et Adonai by Ted Pearce
N - Not To Us, sung on You Are My Strength by Tents of Mercy
O - On Your Walls O Jerusalem, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
P - Praise the Lord, sung on You Are My Strength by Tents of Mercy
Q - (none)
R - Ron'nu Tzadikim B'Adonai, sung on Fire & Cloud by the Lodens
S - Shabechi Yerushalayim, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
T - Tov L'hodot, sung on All Israel Shall Be Saved by Tents of Mercy
U - Unfailing Love, sung on Come Dance With Me by Joel Chernoff
V - Ve'Ahavta, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
W - Wonderful One, sung on Shalom Jerusalem by Paul Wilbur
X - (none)
Y - Yoducha Amim Elohim, sung on Sim Shalom by Steve McConnell
Z - Zealous Over Zion, sung on Zealous Over Zion by Ted Pearce

It's probably not surprising that Q and Z are left over. I was actually hoping that I would have a better "J" song to supplant the one I have, but at least, in the actual song, he sings "Yeshua" instead of that linguistically mutated version of His Name.</lj-cut text>

But then I got curious as to how an all-Hebrew list would stack up, <lj-cut text="so I did it in Hebrew.">...so I did it in Hebrew.

Aleph - Ahalel, sung on Sar Shalom by Karen Davis
Bet - B'tach B'Adonai, sung on Highways to Zion by Chuck King
Gimel - Goalenu, sung on Sim Shalom by Steve McConnell
Dalet - Dracheichah, sung on The Lamb Trilogy
Hey - Hal'li Nafshi, Worship In Jerusalem with King of Kings Assembly
Vav - Ve'Ahavta, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
Zayin - Z'chor Davar, sung on Songs for the Sabbath by Danny Maseng
Chet - (none)
Tet - Tov L'hodot, sung on All Israel Shall Be Saved by Tents of Mercy
Yud - Yoducha Amim Elohim, sung on Sim Shalom by Steve McConnell
Kaph - Ki Malachav, sung on Voices For Israel by The Chevra
Lamed - Lo b'Chail, sung on All Israel Shall Be Saved by Tents of Mercy
Mem - Mimizrach, sung on Hallelu Et Adonai by Ted Pearce
Nun - Nachamu Ami, sung on Elohim: Experience Worship from the Heart of Israel by Celeste Mills and Chaim Warshawsky
Samech - (none)
Ayin - Al Har Gavoah, sung on All Israel Shall Be Saved by Tents of Mercy
Pey - P'siat HaMashiach, sung on Fire & Cloud by the Lodens
Tsaddi - Tzadik Katamar, played on Horas & More by David & the High Spirit
Qoph - Kineti, sung on Zealous Over Zion by Ted Pearce
Resh - Ron'nu Tzadikim B'Adonai, sung on Fire & Cloud by the Lodens
Shin - Shabechi Yerushalayim, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
Tav - (none)

As seen above, I only have 19 letters represented above. But I actually do have a song that starts with "chet"; the problem is that it kills most of my liking of it with one two-word phrase, perhaps the most famous word generally related to Jewish weddings and the like, and it basically gives the credit to the constellations (if it doesn't, why even mention them?).
</lj-cut>

A caveat I should give both for these and the "S" list is one that I should not wish to go without making explicit: Just because I list one song on an album doesn't mean I like them all of them, most of them, or even the rest of them, although it is often the case. And as I know I've said at least once, the most major factor in whether or not I like a song is whether or not I feel the lyrics are right, and then the sound of the music comes into play. Perhaps that's why my other favorite kind of music is video game music and remixes: No lyrics means no conflict with what I believe to be right.

Hey, if you wanna do this, too, go ahead

8:47PM - 10 Favorite Songs Beginning With a Letter Meme

So, I figured I'd do this thing, and asked for a letter. TalkingDog gave me an "S", so here we go:

Shabechi Yerushalayim, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
Shimcha Kadosh, sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
Save Your People (a.k.a. Hoshia Et Amecha), sung on Go Through the Gates by Barry & Batya Segal
Sim Shalom, sung on Sim Shalom by Steve McConnell
Shalom Rav, sung on Ata Kochi by Tents of Mercy
Shiru L'Adonai Shir Chadash, sung on Kol Yisrael Yivasha by Tents of Mercy
Shout for Joy, sung on The Watchman by Paul Wilbur
Shuvee, sung on The Lamb Trilogy by Lamb
Saturate My Soul, sung on Israel My Beloved by Karen Davis
Shlach Orcha, sung on Worship in Jerusalem with King of Kings Assembly

(Incidentally, Shema, sung on Songs of the Torah, currently occupies slot #11 on this top 10.)

Anyway, if you want a letter, ask me in chat if you can, or comment here if you must. If you do the latter, don't expect it for a while, y'know?

1:35PM - Movie

Now that that's out of the way...

I watched Because of Winn-Dixie and Ben-Hur yesterday, bringing Charlie & the Chocolate Factory back to the top of the queue.

The former was cute, though not particularly noteworthy in my estimation. It's enjoyable.

The latter... oh, the latter. There are a few things in it... I don't know whether they are General Lew Wallace's errors, or Hollywood's. In either case...

1. It might have spared us the verbal insistence that it was winter, especially as no date or time of year is explicitly given in the Word, and actual study points to earlier in the year.
2. So why is this "star" made by an angel? Isn't it an extremely rare yet meaningful conjunction? Certainly more meaningful than "poof, here's a star."
3. If whoever it was had studied the Word as closely as he had studied life in the Roman Empire, we would not have yet another story putting the shepherds and wise men in the same place at the same time.
4. And Biblical "leprosy" would have been correctly portrayed, as well. It's not all chronic, folks, and people with the chronic version were supposed to be allowed among the people. Not your standard disease, apparently, and certainly not the thing we know as leprosy today.

12:46PM - Open letter to a certain browser hijacker

Go away. Take your malicious code bearing vile images and text and stick it on a large magnet. Then take the magnet and poke yourself in the eyes with it until you get the extremely simple concept that my mother does not want incest ANYTHING, or for that matter, pornographic anything, free or not. Not stories, not photos, not videos. I do not care whether your host company allows that abominable content, because that's not the point here. The point is, those who seek it will find it; those who do not desire it SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO VIEW IT WHEN SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING THAT WOULD NOT LEAD THEM THERE!

As a side note... Lycos, why does clicking on a search result on an MSN search results page take me to your search page?

2:28PM - Warning: Truth of Bible Assumed Herein

All italics except this one are used for emphasis or citing. This is in contrast to the general use in translations of Scripture, which is to indicate that the word or phrase is not in the Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek that they translated it from, but was added in because the translators thought it made more sense that way.

Traditional Christians have been saying for years that we're not under the Law. And you know what? They're right. )

6:53PM - Holiday Greetings and CD Expectation

I think I've figured out the problem with "Merry Christmas." When you say "Merry Christmas," you're putting the intended recipient with Christmas, something that those who don't celebrate it don't want, and you may get one of several reactions to it. I, personally, quietly take it in stride, or if I'm in a chatroom, respond with a more generic greeting or goodbye, as appropriate. Others may respond with a gretting appropriate for their holiday of choice, or an explanation in varying degrees of patience that they do not celebrate it.

So celebrate all you want. Just be aware that some of your friends and even family may want to be left out of it.

In other news, I have recently ordered three CDs from three different sources: Hallelu Et Adonai by Ted Pearce; End of the Exile by Rod Woodruff; and Torah is Life by Lenny & Varda Harris. I've already heard some of the songs on the first one, and I have a previous CD by its artist called Zealous Over Zion, so I'm pretty sure that'll be good. I've not heard Rod Woodruff before, so this should be interesting. As for Lenny & Varda, they have a fairly good track record, save for a song on the last CD which had a line equating my God with Allah, something which I will not believe no matter who touts it, and a more minor wince-worthy decision to put "Oy!" (meaning "woe" or "lamentation") in Hava Nagila. But I won't throw out them or the CD for those.

None of them have come yet. I patiently anticipate.

6:41AM - C&tCF First Impressions

While stopping at Wal*Mart last night to get Revenge of the Sith, I also picked up Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I haven't viewed it yet; I have D. W. Griffith'sAbraham Lincoln in the DVD queue ahead of it, I prefer to watch movies alone, and this laptop seems to not like the idea of playing DVDs anymore, so it may be a little while before I do see it. But here are my impressions from the box.

 • Well! I wonder which one's Charlie... The one on the left? Nah, he looks like the undead. Maybe he vants to suck your blood... but chocolate will do. Second from the left... nah, too busy scarfing to get a good shot. Can't be the title character. The one in the middle? Traditional haircut, consistent skin color, looks reasonably happy... I'd say we have a winner!
 • And now for the back cover. So here are five Oompa-Loompas whose expressions I can see clearly. ... Maybe we caught them at a bad time, but are we really expected to be happy... like them? I suppose I could do that, but I'd have to be in a bad mood first... Maybe the message is, "As scowly as we look, we're still happier than you are."
 • The back-of-box credits. Well, Freddie "Charlie" Highmore is listed, but no Annasophia "Violet" Robb, Julia "Veruca" Winter, Jordan "Mike" Fry, or Philip "Augustus" Wiegratz. Hey, Christopher Lee. And Felicity Dahl's an Executive Producer.

Well, guess I'd better put it back on the stack for now.

EDIT: Oh, in other news, I saw something called The Bible Game for the GBA. Had I had more time last night, I would've picked it up out of curiosity. I know they almost certainly misrepresented it somehow, but I want to know how... from my perspective.

Also, I'm going to be doing the 26 Things... thing this time. Watch this page for developments* on that.

10:32AM

Oh, in other news, last Friday evening (Oh, yeah, that's new), something I've been doing for weeks but probably shouldn't have been finally backfired. I had been using my laptop as a jukebox for dinner music. Here's a more detailed explanation, for the interested. ) I was going to get some ice cream after dinner, when I knocked the wine glass into the keyboard, which shut it off. After unplugging it, draining it, some other stuff, and waiting, I turned it back on to find that the "o" key was a little sticky. I waited longer, and now it doesn't stick enough for it to activate, but works properly. However, now, the grave, 5, 6, 9, 0, and left Ctrl keys don't work. I can get around them all without even activating the onscreen keyboard, though for ~, `, %, ^, (, ), and 9, I have to use Character Map. For 0, 5, and 6, I can just use fn+M, fn+I, and fn+O, respectively. And of course, there's a right Ctrl, though I have to train myself to use it, lest I replace highlighted text with a single "c".

This week, I plan to put the laptop on the piano's keyboard cover and just have the volume louder than I usually do, and see how that works. Failing that, I can just pop a CD into mom's computer and play from there. That seems to work well.

Take this as a warning, I guess. It could have been worse. Much worse. That I'm typing this entry on that very laptop says that it was not as bad as it could have been.

3:48PM - Yowsers!

I haven't updated this thing since April. Maybe I'll use it to review the movies I watch, or something.

The ones I have in line to view are here. )

You can see my progress on these, and some of the movies I've already seen, on The Film-Lover's Checklist. Just put "Nyperold" into the text box in the green area at left. If you want me to review one of the movies I've already seen, make a suggestion in a comment, and I'll consider it.

But for now, here's a musical meme I picked up from [info]whimsicorical:

1. Open up the music player on your computer.
2. Set it to play your entire music collection.
3. Hit the “shuffle” button.
4. Tell us the title of the next ten songs that show up (with their musicians), no matter how embarrassing. That’s right, no skipping that Carpenters tune that will totally destroy your hip credibility. It’s time for total musical honesty. Write it up in your blog or journal and link back to at least a couple of the other sites where you saw this.
5. If you get the same artist twice, you may skip the second (or third, etc.) occurances. You don’t have to, but since randomness could mean you end up with a list of ten song with five artists, you can if you’d like.

10:32AM - Friday Five for 04.25.05 -- International Travel

This week's questions were suggested by [info]aradaetheelf.

1. You have the summer and plenty of money to travel abroad. Where all would you go?
2. What foods would you be sure you got to eat?
3. What landmarks would you be sure you got to see?
4. What airline would you use?
5. Would your knowledge of other languages influence where you went? (i.e. would you be more likely to go to France if you spoke French?)

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so here.

1:50PM - StarFox Assault? Pass the Pepper

Okay, so I got StarFox Assault last night. I played to the point where this thing happened ). It seems to be a good game so far, but with the good gameplay comes a reminder of what I disliked about the original: having to go after my teammates' pursuers. Even doing ground assault doesn't get me out of it, apparently. Hey Krys, call Falco. I'm kinda busy down here, ya know? *runs over an Aparoid* Haha!

The overall sound doesn't seem up to Adventures standards, at least not in mono mode, but it's certainly more than passable. It's too bad they didn't get the VAs from Adventures, if for no other reason than vocal continuity. But the voices they did get are okay. I didn't encounter any that are painfully bad, but I figure I'm kind of tolerant in that regard.
